Carencro roofing

A roofer who knows Carencro.

Carencro sits at the north end of Lafayette Parish, about 17 miles south of our Opelousas base on I-49. It is one of the closest Lafayette Parish towns to us, and a free inspection here is usually easy to schedule.

The city has grown fast. Its population went from 7,526 at the 2010 census to 9,272 in 2020, and new homes keep going up on both sides of the interstate. That means a mix of older roofs downtown and young roofs in new neighborhoods, and each needs a different kind of attention.

Tornadoes off the interstate

On April 14, 2018, an EF-2 tornado with peak winds near 115 mph touched down between University Avenue and Patin Road north of Carencro. The National Weather Service found it damaged several homes, knocked over a large billboard, crossed I-49 and damaged businesses on the east side before damaging more roofs on its way toward Arnaudville.

Hurricane wind on open ground

Carencro grew up on the Carencro Prairie, and on a newer lot without mature trees nothing breaks the wind before it reaches the roof. When Hurricane Delta moved through in October 2020, Lafayette Regional Airport recorded a 75 mph gust. Wind like that peels back shingle edges and ridge caps first, and the damage is easy to miss from the yard.

New builds and older downtown homes

A newer roof in a fast-growing subdivision can still leak at pipe collars, valleys and step flashing if the details were rushed. Older homes near downtown and the Cultural District can hide tired decking under the current shingles. We inspect both kinds with the same checklist and photos.

Permits & code

Permits in Carencro

Inside city limits, the City of Carencro Planning Department at City Hall, 210 East St. Peter Street, handles building permits and inspections. Its building permit application covers residential and commercial work, and the city asks you to call ahead for an appointment. For homes outside city limits in unincorporated Lafayette Parish, permits go through Lafayette Consolidated Government's Permitting Division. Louisiana's Act 239 requires permits and inspections for reroofing on projects started on or after August 1, 2025. Requirements vary, so confirm for your address.

From a prairie settlement to a growing city

The first settler in the Carencro area was an Acadian, Louis Pierre Arceneaux, in 1765. The town was first called St. Pierre, and its name later became Carencro, from a Cajun French word for buzzard. By 1890 it had 287 people, a hotel, a town hall and a hook and ladder company. St. Peter's Catholic Church dates its current building to 1906, and in 2015 the state named part of downtown an official Cultural District.

Carencro also has a link to our home base. Evangeline Downs ran on US 167 in Carencro from 1966 until 2005, when racing moved to the new track in Opelousas, and the old site became an Amazon distribution center in 2020. Growth along the interstate has kept coming since, and the city's 2025 Comprehensive Plan lays out how it will keep growing.

What Carencro weather does to a roof

Hurricanes are not the only threat here. When Hurricane Lili came ashore in October 2002, the National Hurricane Center logged tornadoes in Lafayette Parish, and the 2018 Carencro tornado formed in a spring storm with no hurricane anywhere nearby. Fast spring storms like that can lift a whole run of shingles in a few minutes.

Summer heat does slower damage. A newer home with too little attic ventilation can cook its shingles from below and shorten their life well before the roof looks old. After a storm, or if you just bought a home and want to know where the roof stands, a free inspection gives you photos and a straight answer. We document the damage with photos and a written assessment you can give your insurer.

Carencro FAQ

Questions from Carencro homeowners.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Carencro?
Louisiana now requires permits and inspections for reroofing on projects started on or after August 1, 2025. Inside city limits, building permits come from the City of Carencro Planning Department at City Hall. Outside the city, Lafayette Consolidated Government handles permits. Confirm what your address needs before work is scheduled.
How far is Carencro from Delta Roofing & Repair?
About 17 miles south of Opelousas on I-49. Carencro is one of the closest Lafayette Parish towns in our service area, so an inspection here is usually easy for us to schedule. Call 337-351-3282. We are available 7 days a week.
My house is only a few years old. Should I still get it inspected?
After a big storm, yes. Newer roofs can lose shingles in high wind, and leaks often start at pipe collars, valleys and flashing rather than in the open field of the roof. A free inspection with photos tells you whether anything needs attention now, before water reaches the decking.
