Roofing in Sunset, LA
Leak repair, full replacements and storm work for Sunset homeowners, a short drive down I-49 from our Opelousas base.
A roofer who knows Sunset.
Sunset sits off I-49 at exit 11, about 9 miles south of Opelousas by road, right next door to Grand Coteau. We work across town along Napoleon Avenue and the Sunset Strip, out on LA 182, on the farm roads west of town, and along the frontage roads by the interstate.
Like many South Louisiana towns, Sunset began as a railroad town, and it was incorporated in 1904. It later took the nickname Sweet Potato Capital of the Nation, and in 2014 the Legislature named it the Rubboard Capital of the World. Every project begins with a thorough inspection and a detailed written estimate, with photos of what we find.
What wears out roofs in Sunset.
Tornadoes west of town
On June 6, 2019, an EF1 tornado with winds near 110 mph touched down near Hypolite Miller Road and tracked northeast to about 2 miles west-northwest of Sunset. It damaged a shed, trees and cars along Dargin Road and took the roof off a home on Mills Road. Storms like that are why we check every edge, ridge and fastener.
Squall lines that snap poles
Strong winds from the March 24, 2025 storms broke utility poles and left Sunset Middle School without power, closing it for much of that week while Entergy crews made repairs. The same line damaged homes south of Eunice. When wind is strong enough to snap a pole, it is worth having someone look at the roof before the next rain.
Small town, long history
Sunset has roughly 1,375 housing units, according to a 2026 estimate published by Opportunity St. Landry. Whatever the age of the house, an older roof can hide tired decking and patched flashing under the current shingles. We look for that during the inspection and put it in the written estimate, so there are fewer surprises on tear-off day.
Permits in Sunset
The St. Landry Parish Permits Office covers unincorporated areas of the parish and lists only three towns it serves inside town limits: Arnaudville, Palmetto and Melville. For a Sunset address inside town limits, start with Sunset Town Hall. Outside town limits, the parish office at the courthouse on South Court Street in Opelousas handles permits. Under Louisiana's Act 239, roof construction and reroofing projects that began on or after August 1, 2025 need a permit and inspection. Requirements vary, so confirm what your address needs.

From Chretien Point to the rail line
Chretien Point, about 2 miles southwest of town on Blue Spring Road, was built in the 1830s as the center of a 10,000-acre cotton plantation and stood at the heart of the 1863 Battle of Buzzard's Prairie. It was listed on the National Register in 1977 and is now a private residence. The town itself came later, growing up around the railroad and incorporating in 1904.
Today Sunset is a town of about 2,900 people, at the 2020 census. Each May the Sunset Garden Club holds its Celebration of Herbs and Gardens, and each March and September the Exit 11 Yard Sale draws shoppers to Sunset and Grand Coteau. In a town this size, clear communication, timely completion and thorough clean-up matter.
What hurricane rain does here
Hurricane Laura's main rain band crossed Lafayette and St. Landry parishes in August 2020, and a gauge 3 miles east of Grand Coteau, a few miles from Sunset, caught about 7.7 inches in two days. Six weeks later Hurricane Delta added more than 4 inches at the same gauge and a 75 mph gust at the Opelousas airport.
Heavy rain finds every weak spot: worn pipe collars, cracked flashing at walls and chimneys, and shingles lifted by the last storm. We trace leaks to the source, fix what is failing and show you photos. We document the damage with photos and a written assessment you can give your insurer.
