Grand Coteau roofing

A roofer who knows Grand Coteau.

Grand Coteau sits about 8 miles south of Opelousas on the Coteau Ridge, which the town's National Register nomination calls the highest point in St. Landry Parish. The name comes from the French for ‘great hill’. We work across town, from the streets around St. Charles Borromeo Church and the Academy of the Sacred Heart to the homes along Martin Luther King Drive and LA 182.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart opened their school here in 1821, and the Jesuits arrived in 1837. Today about 776 people live in town, and the historic district takes in roughly 60 percent of its residential area. Every project begins with a thorough inspection and a detailed written estimate, with photos of what we find.

Local roofing concerns

What wears out roofs in Grand Coteau.

Older homes need a careful hand

The nomination counts eighteen substantial Creole raised cottages in the district, each a story and a half of frame with the front gallery under a pitched roof, more than in any other town in the surrounding four-parish area. Add Acadian cottages and early 20th century bungalows, and many roofs here sit on old framing that needs a careful tear-off.

Live oak alleys

Two alleys of old live oaks, 1.6 miles in all, cross the pastures north of St. Charles College and once linked the Academy, the town and the other religious centers. Big oaks are part of what makes Grand Coteau beautiful. They also drop limbs in high wind and fill gutters and valleys with leaves, so we check overhangs and valleys on every visit.

Heavy tropical rain

During Hurricane Laura in August 2020, a gauge 3 miles east of Grand Coteau measured about 7.7 inches of rain in two days. In October, Hurricane Delta added more than 4 inches at the same gauge. Rain like that finds every worn pipe collar, cracked flashing joint and lifted shingle, which is why we trace leaks to the source.

Permits & code

Permits in Grand Coteau

The St. Landry Parish Permits Office covers unincorporated areas of the parish and lists only three towns it serves inside town limits: Arnaudville, Palmetto and Melville. For an address inside Grand Coteau town limits, start with Grand Coteau Town Hall. Outside town limits, the parish office at the courthouse on South Court Street in Opelousas handles permits. Under Louisiana's Act 239, roof construction and reroofing projects that began on or after August 1, 2025 need a permit and inspection. Requirements vary, so confirm what your address needs.

A historic district with landmark roofs

The nomination names three buildings of at least state-level architectural significance: the Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles College and St. Charles Church. The church, designed by architect James Freret, had its cornerstone placed in 1879, and its rear tower carries a Second Empire mansard roof, one of only about six examples of the style in the state. St. Charles College has an elaborate castellated roofline.

The Academy campus, listed on the National Register in 1975, covers about 250 acres with formal gardens and an oak alley. It has operated continuously since 1821, through fire, epidemics and the Civil War.

What older roofs in Grand Coteau need

Raised cottages and bungalows often have steep pitches, dormers, galleries tied into the main roof and old chimneys, and the nomination's inventory notes a tin roof on one 1850s raised home and dormers on others. Each of those details is a place where water can get in.

On homes like these we take our time. We inspect the decking, flashing and chimney collars, photograph what we find and write a detailed estimate before any tear-off, with transparent pricing and no hidden fees. We document the damage with photos and a written assessment you can give your insurer.

Grand Coteau FAQ

Questions from Grand Coteau homeowners.

Do you work on older homes in the historic district?
Yes. We start with a thorough inspection, look closely at decking, flashing and chimneys, and write a detailed estimate with photos so you know what you are dealing with before work starts. If your home has a metal roof, we work on those too, along with shingle and flat roofs.
Who handles roofing permits in Grand Coteau?
The St. Landry Parish Permits Office lists Arnaudville, Palmetto and Melville as the only towns it covers, so inside Grand Coteau town limits, ask Grand Coteau Town Hall. Outside town limits, the parish office handles it. Since August 1, 2025, Louisiana requires a permit and inspection for reroofing.
How close are you to Grand Coteau?
Close. Our base in Opelousas is about 8 miles north, a short run down I-49 or LA 182, so inspections here are usually easy for us to schedule. We are available 7 days a week, and inspections and estimates are free. Call 337-351-3282.
